It has been awhile since I last posted on this blog. Honestly, I forgot about it.
Over the past month I have been introduced to Facebook.com.
Wow!
It has been fantastic to see old friends and classmates on facebook. Over the past couple of years I have been thinking about my high school days and have been reminiscing over all those memories created in those years.
It was during that time that DJ the Not So Ordinary was created (Amanda Freely actually helped, by accident, to help me come up with that nickname). It was also during that time that I moved from being a fan of hip hop to DOING hip hop by writing tons of rhymes.
After high school I continued to explore the production and performance of hip hop music. I wrote and produced 3 albums (recorded live and on tape). I grabbed the mic at any bar, pub and party I could. I wrote hundreds and hundreds of rhymes (and still do). I gave the albums away free and sent to them dozens of labels.
I did get one bite from a production company called Order Productions. They signed me to some crappy development contract (which I learned later was a "right of first refusal" should a REAL record company actually want to sign me---lol).
That didn't stop me. I record hip hop music because I love hip hop not because I was hoping to make any money.
In fact, I have never made one cent (after expenses) in all these years of producing albums. As time went on, I continued to study production and was a tough critic of my past work. I started to build a digital home studio and began work on my best work to-date (The Not So Ordinary Return of DJ). In 2004, I finished the album and released it under my own label (Not So Ordinary Music).
I tried to get shelf-space in a number of local record stores and finally got a deal with a music store in downtown Boston called "SecondSpin" on Winter Street. I was able to sell some CDs there until they went out of business.
As independent music stores disappear my distribution avenues have dried up. Thus, I have turned to the Internet to keep my sound alive. In the past week, I have published that digital CD online at dj.libsyn.com and on itunes.
I have ordered more hard-copies of the CD from discmakers.com and they will be available in early 2009.
Check it out and let me know what you think.
I am starting work on my 5th album but have no projected release date.
